Bodega Bay Fishing Report Week of 6-8-25

The weather gods somehow gave us 4 days of calm weather for salmon between 2 months of wind. We made the most of it, Salmon was a bust out of Bodega close to port, those who made the long run south were rewarded with limits for the most part, Rockfish was as good as it gets, lingcod were decent.

After three weeks of wind, we made the run north and fished all over the place looking for biters. It took the fish a few hours to realize the ocean had calmed down. They did start to bite a little in the early afternoon. We had to sort through a lot of small rockfish. However, we gathered limits of blues and blacks. We only landed a big 18 lb ling. Not a great day, but not terrible.

After a few calm days of weather, the fish were motivated to eat. We quickly got to work casting micro irons into wash rocks and limited out on jumbo blues and olives. The fishing was about as wide open as it gets, with a lot of sight fishing and rockfish jumping on the surface. The lings bit okay; we lost a handful but landed 10 nice lings for 6 folks. The flat weather and good rockfish bite made it a pretty fun day with a lot of catch and release action.

Opening day of salmon was a bit of a bust for us out of Bodega. We headed northwest and put in lines off the Russian River in 300 feet of water. We instantly hooked a 19-incher on the drop. Eventually, we hooked another dozen of them and their smaller buddies. We trolled all the way up to Salt Point for not a single legal fish. Our clients were interested in catching something, so in the afternoon, we swung in and grabbed a half limit of rockfish and lingcod in about 30 minutes before heading home. Captain Josh stayed south the entire day and landed a few really nice fish right off Bodega Head (pictured below), but overall a very slow day for the entire fleet. Many boats reported a wide-open insane bite below the Farallons, so we made a plan for the next day.

For the closing day of salmon season, we made the long run south. We left at 5:00 AM and started flying south at 30+ knots for the 45 nautical mile journey to south of the Farallon Islands. We had hopes of a wide-open bite and limits in minutes, as the guys on Saturday found. We had rods in the water by 6:30 AM and found that was not going to be the case for us, but started having a steady bite every 15 minutes or so. However, we seemed to have a hard time keeping them on the hook. We had dozens of 10-second bites and scratched baits, so it took a while to get all our fish. We landed our limit of client salmon by 1:30 PM and tried for some crew fish, but the salmon seemed to slow down, so we made our way home around 2:15. Overall, a pretty exciting day with lots of action, but not the wide-open craziness we were expecting. It looks like we are back to lingcod and halibut for a while, but the tuna water is shaping up, and I’ve heard of two reliable rumors of Bluefin being landed this weekend out of Half Moon Bay. I would not be surprised to start seeing them here in the near future with the way the current water temperatures are, but our close friend, the north wind, will likely return and kill any chance of that happening.

Sorta Salty – Cpt. Josh Report

Had a late start due to clients ending up in Jenner. Finally threw the ropes at 7am and made the long run down as well. As soon as we got there, we boxed a nice fish hoping they were going to turn on and have a repeat of “wide open” fishing that was reported the day before. Unfortunately, as Captain Ryan Mentioned, it was a slow pick for remainder of the day for us as well. Lots of silvers lots of shorts, but did manage a few nice ones before heading home, ending up with a fish per rod. Here are a couple photos from Sunday.
