Both Boats Ran north and found decent rockfish and lingcod action. Rockfish bit good in shallow, lingcod were slow, one the bigeye we had 2 lings for the boat, Billy on the salty had 4. Weather was nice at least.

Pretty much the same story as before, Capt Josh and billy had some OK lingcod and rockfish action. Sounded like 4 or 5 lings per boat and limits of rockfish.

The weekend brought more excitement to us, when our new Deckhand Sawyer came in telling us there was tons of mackerel and bait near the harbor the night before when him and some buddies were fishing. Live bait always means better fishing for us in Bodega, so we gathered up about 50+ baits including mackerel, herring, sardines, anchovies and smelt. We were sending down a true buffet of options. Capt. Billy decided to run down to the location and do a drift for halibut and produced 2 nice fat flatties with the larger going 43″. After that the bite slowed and he headed north to grab 4 lings and his limits of rockfish. We charged north a bit early to get our lingcod and rockfish knocked out and made quick work of them with 5 lings with the largest being about 20lbs, and limits of rockfish. We then went back south and worked on halibut, gathering up 2 nice fish with one being about 30″ and the other closer to 36″. All around a solid day with some big fish to be had and some fun live bait action.

Knowing the halibut bite was early, and were to start at we left the dock at 6am with halibut on our mind. First thing we made bait with mostly nice 8″ herring filling the tank. As soon as we dropped halibut rods we had a double before the rods even went in the holders and proceeded to boat 6 jumbo fish in our first 2 drifts. After that happened we decided to lock in on the halibut and focus on them for the day instead of rockfish and lingcod. The morning bite died but we had steady action throughout the day, getting to 4 more fish by 1pm and loosing many more, at about 1:30 the bite came back on and we boated 2 last fish to finish out our limits for 3 father-son duos for fathers day. The fish were big and mean, honestly I’m not used to California halibut actually fighting, it took over 10 minutes to get each fish to the boat as they made several runs. We had three halibut over 40″, eight between 35″ and 40″, and our smallest outlier coming in at 30″ I’m defiantly not a halibut fisherman, I personally hate fishing the mud flats, hate the small fish that don’t fight and hate the slow monotonous action that’s typical for halibut. Today was the exact opposite, Hard takedowns ripping line off the reels, fast pace action and clean blue water. Nonmatter what species your into catching, this action is super fun, defiantly the best day of the year so far for me.
