Bodega Bay Fishing Report Week of 8-20-24

Bodega Bay Fishing Report 8-17-24

From Capt Josh.

SATURDAY: Ran north with a group off 5. Flat ocean, but socked in hard. At one point it felt like it rained for a couple hours. Fishing was incredibly slow, due to water temp dropping 4 degrees. Ended with 13 shy of limits.

Bodega Bay Fishing Report 8-18-24

From Capt Josh.

SUNDAY: Still socked in, but not quite as wet. The fishing also improved with limits of Rockies plus a few for the crew. We bounced up the line all morning finding schools that would only bite on your initial drop, then taper off the more you fished it. At that point we moved up the line to the next school and did it all over again. Fishing should improve as the water temps bounce back to normal.

Tuna Update

TUNA ARE HERE. Boats up in fort Bragg averaged 20 to 40 albacore per boat, running anywhere from 30 to 50 miles. Sounded like 10 to 15lb fish which is pretty typically for this time of year. We will be heading up next weekend so stay posted for how those trips go. It sounded like a few bigeye were in the area so fingers crossed we might be able to find a hungry one. The exciting news is that good numbers of albacore were caught south of bodega bay, with one boat having well over 30 fish about 75 miles south of the harbor. This means that we could very easily see a solid albacore run out of bodega bay once the water moves a little closer. Things are looking good on the tuna front and hopefully the next report is full of tuna!

F/V BIGEYE

We also  have some exciting news that we are adding an upgrade to the fleet specifically for chasing tuna.  Our new boat, the F/V BIGEYE, is a 2820 XLD  Parker powered by twin 300hp outboards and equipped with a full size tuna tower and open array radar and all of the bells and whistles to chase tuna offshore.  We just finalized the purchase but It will take us a few weeks to get the paperwork and insurance up and going, so the Sorta Salty will be running all of the trips until then.
