Bodega Bay Fishing Report Week of 7-28-24

Bodega Bay Fishing Report 7-18-24

From Capt Josh.

Had a last minute cancellation, but ran out trip anyways. We managed limits of lingcod for 3 clients up to 29lbs on the scale. Gregg Williams got his first lingcod ever, and it was an absolute beast being the largest so far this year for the Sorta Salty! By the time we left, it was blowing a solid 20 knots.

From Capt. Josh

Had flat weather with a full boat open charter. We ended with limits of lingcod, plus 3 for the crew! The rockfish bite was slow, but the lings we chomping swimbaits and trap rigs all day in 80 to 120 feet of water. The wide open lingcod fishing continues.

After not being on the water for nearly 10 days, I was pretty motivated to get in on the hot lingcod action. We headed north and had decently calm seas and mellow winds all day. We fished in about 115 feet of water and found a steady bite on 8 to 12lb lings gathering limits by 1 PM before switching over and picking up about 30 medium quality rockfish. Overall all another great day of fishing with steady action throughout the entire day to keep everyone busy.

The wind and seas on Friday picked up substantly and slowed the bite down. A few clients were feeling very under the weather so we opted to stay in a little more protected waters. We found a steady bite on black rockfish in the morning and gathered about half limits. We moved a little further north and found a solid bite on olive rockfish and blue rockfish, with a few good reds in the mix. We finished up limits of big rockfish and did a couple drifts for lingcod. Luckily we picked up 3 lingcod before heading home before the wind got really nasty.

With a calmer sea, we ventured north to look for lingcod, and found a slower bite on lings. We picked up 2 lingcod and decided to go chase bigger rockfish in shallow. We found a excellent bite on jumbo olives and blues and filled the bag. The lingcod never came back to play but we made up for it with lots of action on good quality olives which are one of my favorite inshore rockfish to catch and eat.

We headed north with a flat calm sea and instantly found a wide open bite on rockfish using exclusively small jigs on light tackle. With he lings being fickle, we focused on getting limits of monster rockfish. We caught and released probably nearly 400 rockfish for the day using the trout rods with small irons, and got limits of jumbo blues, blacks and olives to fill the box. We then went and looked for lingcod for 3 hours and completely struck out. Even with the slower lingcod fishing, everyone had a blast with the crazy rockfish action.
