Bodega Bay Crab Report Week of 11-3-25
Crab season is finally here, The crabs are crawling but the ocean has been pretty angry. Fishing is decent, a little hit or miss. But double digit swell heights can have that effect.

Both boats headed out first thing in the morning on a lumpy ocean. We set gear off the river in 90 FOW. Crabbing was decent but not great, maybe 4 keeper average with some good hoops with 7 to 10, The morning hoops pulled a lot better, Cpt Billy said closer to that 7 average. But overall, kind of crappy crabbing. Fishing was good, and we gathered up limits of blues, and a few nice lings in the mix. The late afternoon was absolutely nautical, massive swell hitting on a low tide with winds on top of made the 12′ swells turn into 15’+ barrels from Tomales Point all the way to Bodega Head with a small window near the Jingle Bell buoy that was still close to breaking. Luckily every one made it home safely that we heard of.

After the previous afternoon of nasty weather we decided to cancel Sundays charter trips, The weather was downright ugly in the morning but as the day went on it improved so a few of us jumped on the bigeye and headed out and tried to get a few crab for dinner, it was bad weather and bad seas but sometimes its good practice for the crew and I to deal pulling gear with bad conditions without clients on board that way are are prepared for when it happens unexpectedly. The crabbing in the same area as the day before was very bad, one average at best, it took a while to get to 27 crab , but I think it was due to the massive swells the morning before and just crappy conditions. Overall ugly, probably should have stayed home but we couldn’t help ourselves.

With a much calmer ocean and pleasant conditions, we ventured up and set gear. The fishing was very hit or miss; one second it was wide open with blues chomping at the surface, then 10 minutes of nothing, followed by a repeat if we could get the boat right back on that school. Kind of funky fishing, but we ended with limits of nice fat blues and blacks, with a couple of ling bites and one that made it to the boat. The crabbing was back to a solid 4 average per hoop, with our best being 8 keepers— not wide open but good enough for our taste and some really nice-sized crab in the mix. Overall, a good day with a lot of fun action.
